Parafermions in fractional Chern insulator-superconductor heterostructures: the role of spin polarization

Nanoscience β€’ October 03, 2026

Reading time: ~12 minutes

πŸ“Š Executive Summary

For over a decade, theory proposals for Z3 parafermions in fractional quantum Hall-superconductor structures rested on one specific state: the spin-unpolarized Halperin (1,1,2) state at filling 2/3. That choice was deliberate. Its two edge channels carry opposite spin, so a conventional spin-singlet superconductor across a narrow trench has a natural pairing channel to grab. The 2023 discovery of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states in twisted MoTe2 and rhombohedral graphene changed the platform question. These states appear at zero magnetic field, which removes the conflict between strong fields and superconductivity. They are also believed to be spin- and valley-polarized Jain states. A new arXiv preprint by Aaron Amire (2610.01486, 1 October 2026) analyzes a trench between two polarized 2/3 edges. It asks which electron bilinears survive once singlet pairing loses its easy route. The answer shapes which superconductor, which material and which spin-orbit environment can host parafermions in practice.

Current State

The parafermion recipe has stayed stable since 2012. Take a fractional quantum Hall fluid, cut a narrow trench, and let edge modes on opposite sides talk to each other through two competing processes. One is backscattering, where electrons tunnel across the trench. The other is pairing, induced by a superconductor sitting in or over the trench. Alternate the dominant process along the trench and each domain wall binds a zero mode. For a Laughlin 1/m fluid these are Z2m parafermions. For filling 2/3 the relevant object is a Z3 parafermion with quantum dimension √3. Lindner, Berg, Refael and Stern laid this out in 2012. Clarke, Alicea and Shtengel did so in Nature Communications in 2013. Mong and collaborators followed in 2014 with a 2/3 construction that, through coupled parafermion arrays, reaches a Fibonacci phase capable of universal braiding.

Those 2/3 proposals mostly used the Halperin (1,1,2) state. I worked through the K-matrix algebra in a short Python notebook this morning to keep the bookkeeping honest. K = [[1,2],[2,1]] with charge vector (1,1) gives filling 2/3, determinant -3, and one downstream plus one upstream mode. The spin-polarized Jain version is usually written as K = diag(1,-3): an integer channel plus a counter-propagating 1/3 hole channel. An integer basis change maps one K-matrix onto the other, so the anyons match exactly. The spin labels on the electron operators do not match, and the trench physics depends on those labels.

Recent Breakthroughs

The platform shift came in 2023. Cai and colleagues in the Xu group at the University of Washington reported optical and transport signatures of FQAH states in twisted MoTe2. Park and colleagues measured fractionally quantized anomalous Hall resistance at -2/3 and -3/5 hole filling in Nature the same year, and Xu and coworkers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University reported matching results in Physical Review X. Lu and colleagues in Long Ju's MIT group then found FQAH at a ladder of Jain fractions, including 2/3, in rhombohedral pentalayer graphene aligned to hBN (Nature, 2024). These are Chern bands made by moirΓ© and band engineering. Landau levels play no role, and no external field is needed.

The second shift concerns superconductivity in the same devices. Han and colleagues reported signatures of chiral superconductivity in rhombohedral graphene, and a 2025 preprint from Xu and coworkers described unconventional superconductivity near FQAH and reentrant anomalous Hall phases in twisted MoTe2. For this field, the important part is proximity in parameter space. Superconductor and fractional Chern insulator may sit a gate voltage apart in one flake, so the trench could in principle be defined electrostatically instead of by etching and depositing niobium.

The Amire preprint takes the next logical step. It sets the Halperin assumption aside and asks what a trench between two polarized 2/3 edges allows. The abstract frames the work as a sort over pairing and tunneling bilinears of edge-mode electrons and identifies which ones carry the Z3 structure. The full selection-rule result was not visible in the abstract text I had, so I am treating the specific conclusions as pending a full read. The physical question stands regardless: with all electrons sharing a spin, s-wave singlet pairing between them vanishes by symmetry, and something else has to do the pairing.

Remaining Challenges

Spin selection is the first wall. If both edges are polarized in the same direction, conventional singlet proximity coupling has no matrix element without spin-orbit coupling or a triplet component. Twisted MoTe2 carries strong Ising spin-orbit coupling and spin-valley locking, which can rotate the effective pairing channel. Rhombohedral graphene has weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, so it may need a proximitizing layer such as WSe2, or a superconductor that is already spin polarized. Opposite polarization on the two sides of the trench, from magnetic domains, changes the problem again.

Disorder is the second wall. FQAH gaps in current devices are small and twist-angle inhomogeneity runs across micron scales. A parafermion trench needs a clean, uniform interface over many correlation lengths. Third, the counter-propagating neutral sector of 2/3 edges equilibrates with the charge mode through disorder, and the trench couplings compete with that. Fourth, a Z3 parafermion still braids only Clifford-like operations. Universality needs the Fibonacci phase from coupled arrays or extra non-topological gates, which multiplies the fabrication burden.

The honest limitation applies to my own reading. Everything here is theory meeting a 2023-era platform, and no group has published an unambiguous parafermion signature in any material. The Majorana record of retracted zero-bias peaks argues for patience.

Expert Perspectives

Within the condensed matter community, opinion on FQAH platforms divides along familiar lines. Optimists point out that zero-field fractional states with nearby superconductivity remove the most stubborn obstacle from the GaAs era. Andreev reflection into a fractional edge was only demonstrated by GΓΌl and collaborators in graphene in 2022, years after the theory. Skeptics point out that the polarized Jain identification itself rests mostly on numerics and indirect transport, and that the nature of the nearby superconductor, chiral or otherwise, is still debated. Magnetic imaging by Redekop and colleagues of FCI domains in twisted MoTe2 shows how spatially patchy these states can be.

My field read: the Amire paper matters most as a design constraint. It tells experimentalists that the textbook singlet-pairing picture does not carry over, which affects material choice before anyone etches a trench.

πŸ’‘ Bottom Line: The new FQAH platforms keep the Z3 topology that parafermions need but discard the spin structure that made singlet pairing easy, so the choice of superconductor and spin-orbit environment becomes the gating design decision.

🏒 Market Landscape

Key Players

No company sells parafermion hardware, and none will for years. The commercial relevance runs through topological quantum computing programs and the materials and cryogenic supply chain behind them.

Investment Trends

Quantum capital has concentrated in 2025 and 2026. Quantinuum closed roughly $600 million at a $10 billion pre-money valuation in September 2025. PsiQuantum raised $1 billion at a $7 billion valuation the same month. IonQ, Rigetti and D-Wave used elevated share prices to raise multibillion-dollar equity in aggregate. DARPA's US2QC program advanced Microsoft and PsiQuantum to its final validation phase, and the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative added a broader cohort in 2025.

Topological materials research draws from a different pool: NSF, DOE Basic Energy Sciences, the Simons Foundation and corporate research labs. These grants run in the single-digit millions per group. They are small next to venture rounds and much more stable. The FQAH discovery has pulled moirΓ© materials groups toward superconductor integration, visible in the surge of arXiv preprints on superconductivity near fractional Chern phases since early 2025.

Competitive Dynamics

The competition is among error-protection strategies. Surface codes on superconducting qubits and logical qubits on neutral atoms and ions are shipping today with measured logical error rates. Topological approaches promise hardware-level protection that cuts overhead, though Microsoft's 2025 Nature paper on interferometric parity measurement drew public criticism about whether topological protection had been shown at all.

Parafermions sit one rung above Majoranas: more anyon types, √3 quantum dimension, and a theoretical path to the Fibonacci phase. They also sit one rung lower in maturity. Any player who shows a reproducible parafermion signature in a zero-field FQAH device would have a strong scientific claim. Turning that into a product means competing with error-corrected platforms that will have had another decade of engineering.

Market Projections

McKinsey's 2025 Quantum Technology Monitor estimated quantum computing companies generated roughly $650 to $750 million in 2024 revenue and projected the broader quantum technology market could approach $97 billion by 2035. None of that projection depends on parafermions. A realistic framing: topological hardware is an option on the post-2035 market, and FCI-superconductor parafermions are an option on that option. The near-term addressable spending is cryogenics, crystal growth, nanofabrication and measurement electronics sold to research labs, a segment worth low single-digit billions annually and growing with national quantum programs.

πŸ’‘ Bottom Line: Parafermion physics creates no direct revenue today; its market footprint is research infrastructure and a long-dated option held mainly through Microsoft and the cryogenic supply chain.

πŸ“… Timeline & Milestones

2026 Expectations

Expect theory follow-ups to the Amire preprint mapping pairing channels for same-polarization and opposite-polarization trenches, including spin-orbit-assisted and triplet-proximity cases. On the experimental side, the plausible near-term results are cleaner coexistence maps of FQAH and superconductivity in single twisted MoTe2 and rhombohedral graphene flakes, gate-defined junctions between the two phases, and first Andreev-type measurements on zero-field fractional edges. Claims of parafermion detection in 2026 deserve heavy skepticism.

2027-2030 Outlook

The critical milestone is a reproducible fractional Josephson effect or 6Ο€-periodic signature across a gate-defined trench in an FQAH device, confirmed by at least two independent groups. Improved twist-angle uniformity and larger FQAH gaps are prerequisites. In parallel, Microsoft's Majorana program will either produce convincing topological qubit benchmarks or lose credibility, and that result will drive funding sentiment for all topological approaches. Coupled-parafermion arrays aimed at the Fibonacci phase remain a stretch goal for this window.

Beyond 2030

If parafermion zero modes are confirmed and controllable, the long-term path runs through coupled arrays to Fibonacci anyons and universal topologically protected gates. That would be the first hardware route to universality without magic-state distillation. The dependency chain is long: material quality, then the spin-compatible superconductor, then interface control, then braiding protocols, then scaling. A failure at any link pushes the timeline out by years, and error-corrected conventional qubits may make the advantage moot.

πŸ’° Investment Perspective

Opportunities

The most direct exposure to topological quantum computing among liquid equities is Microsoft, where the quantum program is a rounding error on revenue but carries strategic weight. Picks-and-shovels exposure is cleaner: Oxford Instruments supplies dilution refrigerators and magnets to nearly every lab in this story. Honeywell offers indirect quantum exposure through its Quantinuum stake. The Defiance Quantum ETF (QTUM) spreads risk across quantum and adjacent semiconductor names.

Risk Factors

The physics may not cooperate. The polarized Jain identification for FQAH states is not settled, the nearby superconductors may be incompatible with the needed pairing, and disorder may keep gaps too small. Pure-play quantum stocks (IONQ, RGTI, QBTS) trade on multiples untethered from current revenue and carry no specific exposure to this research line. Topological claims have a record of high-profile retractions, and sentiment shocks hit the whole sector.

Recommendations

Treat this as a research signal. Investors wanting exposure should favor diversified holdings: MSFT for topological optionality inside a profitable business, OXIG.L for cryogenic infrastructure, HON for Quantinuum, and QTUM for basket exposure. Watch arXiv output from the Washington, Cornell, MIT and Shanghai Jiao Tong groups for coexistence and junction results as leading indicators.

WATCH:
the physics is moving quickly, but parafermion hardware is at least a decade from any revenue line an investor can underwrite.

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways

🎯

The Halperin (1,1,2) and polarized Jain 2/3 states share Z3 topological order, yet their spin structure changes which cross-trench couplings exist.

πŸ“Œ

Zero-field FQAH in twisted MoTe2 and rhombohedral graphene removes the old conflict between strong magnetic fields and superconductivity.

⚑

Same-spin edges kill conventional singlet pairing, so spin-orbit coupling or triplet superconductivity becomes a hard requirement for parafermion trenches.

πŸ”‘

Twisted MoTe2, with strong Ising spin-orbit coupling, may hold a structural advantage over rhombohedral graphene for this specific design.

πŸ’Ž

Intrinsic superconductivity reported near FQAH phases opens the possibility of fully gate-defined junctions inside one flake.

πŸš€

No parafermion signature has been confirmed anywhere; treat early claims with the caution the Majorana record has earned.

⚠️

Watch for a reproducible 6Ο€-periodic Josephson signal in an FQAH device as the milestone that would move this from theory to engineering.

πŸ’‘ Lab Test Report

If I were wiring this into a real measurement pipeline, the first variable I would chase is spin and valley domain structure, because a single flipped FQAH domain across the trench changes the allowed bilinears and would look like noise in any automated fit. The second is twist-angle drift; my Python sweep scripts would need to log a local filling calibration at every gate point, or a 6Ο€-periodicity analysis will happily fit artifacts from inhomogeneous density. I would also budget for contact resistance on MoTe2 to dominate early runs, since ohmic contacts to these flakes remain stubborn and they hide edge physics. My honest expectation is that the first two years of any such program go into confirming which superconductor actually couples to which edge, long before anyone sees a parafermion.
